Prostate Cancer and Genetics | mCancer Talk: Coping and living ...

One in six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Age and race are two of the most recognized risk factors, but some risk factors can be inherited. Large scale population studies of men who have brothers or fathers with prostate cancer have shown an increase in risk that is two to three times the general population.

Some clues to inherited risk within a family include:

  • Cancer diagnosed at earlier ages than typically expected (under 40)
  • Families with multiple individuals with prostate cancer
  • Other cancers in family members including:
    • Breast cancer
    • Ovarian or uterine cancer
    • Pancreatic cancer
    • Colorectal cancer

People concerned about their families? history of prostate and other cancer may benefit from meeting with a genetic counselor in the Cancer Genetics Clinic to talk about cancer risk, possible genetic testing, screening options or research opportunities. Families who find that they are at a higher risk for prostate cancer and other cancers can benefit from increased screening and prevention options.

Approximately 5-10% of prostate cancers are thought to be related to high risk susceptibility genes, which can be passed from parent to child. Some genes are currently well known, while it is likely some still remain to be discovered. Some of these genes may also be linked to an increase in risk for additional cancers.

Research is ongoing at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and elsewhere to learn and discover new genes associated with a strong family history of prostate cancer.

Change Management: For the Good Times and Bad | LANDesk Blog

Last week, RBS, Natwest and Ulster Banks in the UK suffered a catastrophic IT failure. This failure is still causing on-going problems for customers as well as those that don?t bank with these organizations. One bad software upgrade has potentially lost this organization, loyal customers, cost them financially, and damaged their reputation.

For those of you outside of the UK that have not heard about this failure, a software upgrade affected the scheduling of batch processing runs that deal with banking transactions, so millions of transactions were not processed. The banks guardian systems spotted a problem during the run on Tuesday and they backed out of this change quickly but since then the banks have had a backlog of payments to get through as they have to re-run batches of transactions in the right sequence and they only actually managed to perform a successful batch run three days later on Friday. One week later customers are still experiencing problems.

A software upgrade affected the scheduling of batch processing runs that deal with banking transactions, so millions of transactions were not processed.

The impact of this failure has been huge. There are many stories emerging of families unable to withdraw money to pay for food and travelers stuck in far flung destinations unable to pay their hotel bills. In addition, the knock on effects are being felt by businesses that don?t themselves necessarily deal directly with these banks such as Estate Agents who have had house buying chains collapse due to inability for one person in the chain to verify deposits have been transferred.

The details about what occurred and the procedures performed to resolve the problem have yet to come from the banks themselves but there has been a lot of speculation about poor testing, inexperienced operators, layoffs removing staff with experience and offshoring operations. This coupled with other rumors about security hacks as the initial reason for this implosion have probably done little for this banking group?s reputation with more than 18 million customers. ?As their crisis policy kicked in, the banks took the unprecedented step of opening on the Sunday and longer hours during the week to help their customers. These costs plus promises of compensation to ensure customers are not out of pocket will undoubtedly hit their bottom line. Added to the banks woes has been the call for the Financial Services Authority to carry out an investigation as to why it?s taking so long to recover.

So a few thoughts on this crisis from an IT perspective:

Change and Release Management must live.? While there have been a lot of recriminations about how long it?s taking to recover from this IT failure, imagine how much more trouble they would have been in without the ability to manage this change or roll the change back if needed. You may think that Change Management is not necessary in your IT support environment or its phase four on your Service Management plan but if you continue to implement changes and release software unmanaged you may not have a business left to support.

IT Business Alignment is dead.?There still seems to be a lot of discussion about aligning IT to the business. I can?t think of a clearer example of how wrong this is. Without IT this banking group cannot run their financial business and if they didn?t realize just how important a role IT plays in their business, they do now. IT is an integral part of a business, not a bolt on that runs parallel and if seen as the latter when making business decisions then expect the consequences as above.

Customer Experience Management of IT.?Check out my previous blog about managing the customer experience of IT. As this banking group now realizes the customer experience is not just about their frontline support staff operate, the UX of their online banking or for that matter the service provided to customers by branch banking assistants, it?s the whole end to end package.

And on that note, if you are a Natwest customer visiting a branch banking assistant, remember it?s not the tellers fault and they?re probably experiencing similar issues too. I would imagine many of them did not choose to work on Sunday ? so be kind to them.

Virtually whack it with a responsive tennis racket

VIRTUAL tennis might soon become a lot less virtual. A game controller that can twist, deflect and vibrate could bring a new level of realism to video-game tennis by simulating the impact of a ball.

In a real game, when a player hits the ball, the racket recoils with an equal and opposite reaction - in accordance with Newton's third law of motion.

With the advent of motion- and gesture-based controllers, video games that simulate tennis have become popular. But they have mostly ignored the physical interaction of the ball and racket.

Now Fong Wee Teck and colleagues from the Institute for Infocomm Research at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore have developed a haptic controller that looks a lot like a normal tennis racket.

Its head moves and twists, creating opposite forces on the handle that make it feel as if a ball is hitting the head. Connecting the head to the handle are two actuators that can push and pull each side in different directions, generating up to 60 g, a force equivalent to 60 times the gravitational pull of Earth, a bit less than the 100 g routinely generated during a tennis match.

A vibration element enhances the feeling of realism by changing its frequency depending on how the virtual ball "strikes" the racket. In a real game, Fong says, the human "sensory system can discern the variations in these vibrations".

"Maybe the ball was hitting harder or maybe your racket string is of different quality. We can simulate this," Fong says. The team will present their research in August at the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles.

Obama wants your wedding presents

The political Groveler in Chief really, Really, REALLY wants to stay in that big house, have the cool airplane, and continue his economy-destroying agenda. To do that, he wants your money.?Never mind?the millions he gets from multiple trips to Hollywood at events no working person (not actually serving him crepes) will ever be invited to.

Hey! Getting married? Why not ask your guests to, rather than helping you and your betrothed start out on your new life together, just send the money they?were going spend helping you to him instead? Help him get re-elected?? Cool idea!?

AMD launches Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, demands rematch with NVIDIA

AMD launches new flagship Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, demands rematch with NVIDIA

If you've been missing out on the graphics card wars of late, then here's a quick rundown. AMD launched its high-end $549 Radeon HD 7970 at the end of last year, and it reigned comfortably for a few months until NVIDIA came out with the masterful GeForce GTX 680. That would have been the end of the matter, at least for this product cycle, except for one crucial factor: time. Having reached the market so much earlier, AMD has now had six months to not only tweak its drivers but also its 28nm silicon. That process has already culminated in 1GHz cards at the low- and mid-ranges, and today it leads to the (slightly predictable) announcement of a Radeon HD 7970 'GHz Edition' -- priced at $499 and expected to be available from a range of board makers from next week. To keep you amused in the meantime, there's plenty of detail in the gallery below and after the break.

Update: review roundup added here.

Study: Blogging Relieves Stress on New Mothers | GantDaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK ? New mothers who read and write blogs may feel less alone than mothers who do not participate in a blogging community, according to family studies researchers.

?It looks like blogging might be helping these women as they transition into motherhood because they may begin to feel more connected to their extended family and friends, which leads them to feel more supported,? said Brandon T. McDaniel, graduate student in human development and family studies at Penn State. ?That potentially is going to spill out into other aspects of their well being, including their marital relationship with their partner, the ways that they?re feeling about their parenting stress, and eventually into their levels of depression.?

McDaniel and colleagues from Brigham Young University surveyed 157 new mothers about their media use and their well-being. The moms were all first-time parents with only one child under the age of 18 months ? most much younger than this. The researchers report in the online version of Maternal and Child Health Journal that blogging had a positive impact on new mothers, but social networking ? mainly Facebook and MySpace ? did not seem to impact their well-being.

?We?re not saying that those who end up feeling more supported all of a sudden no longer have stresses, they?re still going to have those stressful moments you have as a parent,? said McDaniel. ?But because they?re feeling more supported, their thoughts and their feelings about that stress might change, and they begin to feel less stressed about those things.?

McDaniel pointed out several potential benefits for new mothers who blog, including giving moms both a way to connect with family and friends who do not live nearby and an outlet to use and showcase their hobbies and accomplishments, particularly for stay-at-home moms.

The researchers found that 61 percent of the mothers surveyed wrote their own blogs and 76 percent read blogs. Eighty-nine percent of the mothers who wrote their own blogs did so to ?document personal experiences or share them with others,? and 86 percent wanted to stay in touch with family and friends through the blog.

Because this is one of the first studies to look at the effects of participation in online communities on new mothers, McDaniel noted that there is not enough information collected yet to determine how or why blogging and social networking have markedly different impacts on new moms. However, this study demonstrated that mothers who blogged frequently show stronger connections to their family and friends.

The researchers saw a significant correlation between a strong connection to family and friends and increased feelings of social support, which in turn led to higher marital satisfaction, less marital conflict and less parenting stress. The mothers who experienced fewer feelings of parenting stress also had fewer feelings of depression.

Study participants completed an online survey that focused on two main subjects ? their media use and their well-being. Mothers rated their feelings on scales corresponding to each item. Moms also tallied time spent on different activities throughout the day, including sleep, housework, childcare tasks and computer usage. They reported spending about three hours per day on the computer, using the Internet ? behind only childcare, at almost nine hours a day, and sleep, at about seven hours per day.

McDaniel is continuing this line of research and exploring why blogging has the significant impact it does with new moms, while social networking may not always show the same effect. He emphasizes that this initial study is all correlational research, and one cannot establish causation from this study.

Sarah M. Coyne and Erin K. Holmes, assistant professors, School of Family Life, Brigham Young University, also worked on this research.

Microsoft Surface Tablet Hands-on: The Future of Windows is Here [Video]

Microsoft says Windows 8 re-imagines its OS, and now we have hardware that re-imagines tablets to match. We just spent some time with the Surface for Windows RT tablet, an ARM-powered magnesium beauty with a built-in kickstand and very unique Touch Cover keyboard that does Apple?s Smart Cover one better. Here?s our initial impressions.

Made out of magnesium, the Surface is solidly built, yet light for a 10-inch tablet. At 1.5 pounds, it?s a bit heavier and thicker than the iPad, but you?re getting more real estate. It?s also fairly thin, at just 0.4 inches thick. We liked the sturdy build, as well as the beveled edges, which made holding it fairly comfortable.

The tablet?s integrated kickstand, which is quite sizable, also feels very sturdy for something so thin. Two small indentations on the long ends of the Surface allow you to flip it out easily, but we, along with some others here, struggled at first to figure it out. It was a small learning curve, though.?

Aside from the kickstand, the other big hardware feature is the magnetic cover with the built-in keyboard. One version uses a touch-sensitive keyboard and touchpad, which measures how hard you press on its felt-like surface. It measures just 3 mm thick. A more traditional keyboard, with mechanical keys and touchpad, is about 5mm thick. Both snap on firmly to the tablet, and, in a neat trick, will change the background color of the Surface to match the color of the keyboard.

While a Microsoft representative said that typing on the touch keyboard was twice as efficient as typing on glass, the lack of any give still means it?ll be less efficient than typing on a traditional layout. However, we did like the way it integrates with the Surface, and are a little surprised that something like this hasn?t come out for the iPad yet.

Both tablets have a 10.6-inch ClearType display with Gorilla Glass. In our very brief hands-on time, flicking through menus and opening items was quick and smooth, and the screen had very wide viewing angles, too. Microsoft is being a little cagey on the resolution of the screen, though.

The RT version of the tablet will run an Nvidia Tegra processor, and measure about 0.4 inches thick and weigh 1.5 pounds. It will have a full-size USB 2.0 port, and come in 32GB and 64GB sizes. It will cost roughly the same as other ARM-based tablets?we?re guessing in the $500 range?and be available right around the same time as Windows 8, later this year.

The Windows 8 Pro version will be a slightly thicker 0.53 inches, and come in at a heavier 2 pounds. That?s because this tablet will have an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor. Unlike the RT version, this Surface tablet will have a USB 3.0 port, and support Pen input with palm rejection. Microsoft says that it will come in 64GB and 128GB flavors, and will be available about three months after Windows 8.?

Palestinian footballer to end strike, go free

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? A member of the Palestinian national soccer team, imprisoned by Israel for nearly three years, agreed Monday to end a hunger strike of more than three months in exchange for his release July 10, his lawyer said.

The deal to free Mahmoud Sarsak would end the longest hunger strike ever launched by a Palestinian prisoner held by Israel. In a symbolic act, Sarsak, who has shed nearly half his normal weight, ate a small piece of chocolate on Monday evening to show the strike was over.

Israel has accused Sarsak of being active in the violent group Islamic Jihad, a claim he has denied. He was arrested in July 2009 at a crossing between his native Gaza and Israel on his way to the West Bank for a football match. He has been imprisoned since then without formal charges or trial.

In March, he launched a hunger strike to press demands for his release.

As his condition deteriorated, prominent figures in the sports world came to his support. FIFA's president asked Israel's football federation to urgently intercede on Sarsak's behalf with the Israeli authorities and FIFPro, an international organization of professional footballers, called for his release. Former Manchester United great Eric Cantona, British filmmaker Ken Loach and others signed a petition calling for freedom for the player.

Meanwhile, Palestine soccer officials, citing Sarsak's ordeal, asked UEFA to remove Israel as the host of the 2013 European Under-21 Championship.

Sarsak's lawyer, Mohammed Jabareen, said the agreement to release his client was reached with Israel's Prisons Authority.

As part of the arrangement he will be transferred from a prison clinic to a civilian hospital on Tuesday to help him recover from the long fast, the lawyer said. On July 10, the 25-year-old Sarsak is to be released and sent to Gaza, Jabareen added.

Israel's Prisons Authority spokeswoman Sivan Weizman declined comment Monday.

Earlier this month, independent doctors who examined Sarsak said he suffered from fainting spells, memory lapses and dangerous pulse disruptions. Six days ago, as negotiations on a release deal moved ahead, Sarsak agreed to drink vitamin-infused milk, and he has gained five kilograms, or 11 pounds, since then, Jabareen said.

Hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel have staged hunger strikes this year, but none have generated as much international support as Sarsak, who kept going when the others stopped.

Israel portrayed Sarsak as a dangerous activist in the violent Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad, which has killed scores of Israelis in bombings and shootings. Israel's Shin Bet security service has alleged that Sarsak once planted a bomb that injured an Israeli soldier but acknowledged in a statement that "there is no evidence available to try him for criminal activity."

Palestinians have hailed hunger strikes as the first effective means in years of exerting pressure on Israel. The protests, which brought several prisoners close to death, Sarsak among them, have also drawn attention to Israel's practice of holding Palestinians without charges or trial, in so-called administrative detention.

Among those held without trial or charges, Sarsak is a special case. Israel has imprisoned him as an "unlawful combatant," a status with even fewer legal rights than those of administrative detainees, according to the Israeli rights group B'Tselem. There's a legal review every six months, but the burden proof is on the prisoner to show he is no longer dangerous, the group said.

The designation of "unlawful combatant" is used for detainees from abroad, and Israel places Gaza in that category. Israel says it cut all ties with Gaza when it withdrew in 2005, after 38 years of occupation. After the takeover of Gaza by the Islamic militant Hamas, Israel declared the territory a "hostile entity."

Sarsak is currently the only "unlawful combatant" held in Israel, according to the Israel Prisons Authority.

He was arrested on July 22, 2009, at a crossing between Gaza and Israel. At the time, he was en route to the West Bank, on the other side of Israel, for a game against a West Bank club.

Egypt votes for president to succeed Mubarak

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians on Saturday voted to choose between a conservative Islamist and Hosni Mubarak's ex-prime minister in a presidential runoff once billed as the country's long-awaited shift to democracy but now clouded by pessimism over the future.

Whoever wins after two days of voting, Egypt's military rulers will remain ultimately at the helm, a sign of how Egypt's revolution has gone astray 16 months after millions forced the authoritarian Mubarak to step down in the name of freedom.

"We are forced to make this choice. We hate them both," said Sayed Zeinhom at Cairo's Boulak el-Dakrour, a densely populated maze of narrow dirt alleys and shoddily built houses. Mahmoud el-Fiqi, waiting with him at a polling center, offered, "Egypt is confused."

The race between Ahmed Shafiq, a career air force officer like Mubarak, and the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, has deeply divided the country after the stunning uprising that ousted Mubarak after 29 years in office, and left many disillusioned about the elections' legitimacy.

Many voters felt that the choice no longer even mattered after a court ruling this week effectively ensured that the military generals who have ruled since Mubarak's ouster will continue to be in power.

The generals took over legislative powers after Egypt's highest court on Thursday ordered the dissolution of the parliament elected just six months ago, and the military made a de facto declaration of martial law, despite earlier promises to hand over power to the new president by July 1. With no constitution or parliament, the president's powers are likely to be determined by a military with power to arrest civilians for crimes as minor as traffic obstruction.

To the activists behind the 18 days of mass protests that toppled Mubarak's regime, the election seemed a cruel joke, that crushed their dream of a new Egypt ? free, democratic and rid of all traces of the old system.

"The revolution will continue and restore the right of those who died in the uprising," said Ziad el-Oleimi, an iconic figure of the anti-Mubarak revolt in which nearly 900 protesters were killed. "This election is essentially for the selection of a new dictator."

That frustration gave rise to a movement among some to either boycott the election or cast invalid ballots.

Contractor Mohammed Ahmed Kamel, a resident of the poor Cairo district of Warraq, crossed out both Shafiq's and Morsi's names in protest on his ballot. "We don't want Islamists and we don't want old regime," he said.

In most polling stations observed by The Associated Press, voter turnout appeared light, with lines considerably shorter than in the first round of elections. There were no official turnout figures, and in districts known to be strongholds for both candidates, voters came out in force and braced the long waits and heat.

Few voters showed the sense of celebration visible in previous, post-Mubarak votes: anxiety prevailed. Some said they felt bitter that their "revolution" had stalled, feared that whoever wins protests will erupt, or were deeply suspicion that the political system was being manipulated.

Others said they were voting against a candidate as much as for a favorite. Anti-Shafiq voters said they wanted to stop a figure they fear will perpetuate Mubarak's regime; anti-Morsi voters feared he would hand the country over to Brotherhood domination to turn it into an Islamic state.

With the fear of new authoritarianism in the future, some said they were choosing whoever they believed would be easiest to eventually force out with new protests.

"We are afraid Egypt will turn into a religious state. Even though Shafiq is not the best one, we want him to maintain the civil state," said Marsa Maher, a Christian housewife.

Mustafa Abdel-Alim, a bank employee with a mark on his forehead sometimes seen on Muslims from repeated prayer, said he wanted to keep out the Brotherhood. "If we elect Morsi ... we won't get rid of them for 100 years," he said.

Many voters are angry at the Brotherhood, which was the big winner in the parliament elections, gaining nearly half the seats, but was later accused of trying to monopolize authority. After Thursday's court ruling, others were angered by what they saw as the military's power grab.

Brotherhood supporter Amin Sayed said he had planned to boycott the vote, but changed his mind after the court ruling.

"I came to vote for the Brotherhood and the revolution and to spite the military council," he said in Imbaba, a Cairo stronghold of Islamists. "If Shafiq wins, we will return to the streets."

Shafiq, an admirer and a longtime friend of Mubarak, has campaigned on a platform of a return to stability, something that resonated with many Egyptians frustrated and fatigued by more than a year of deadly street protests, a faltering economy and surging crime.

Morsi marketed himself as a revolutionary who is fighting against the return of the old regime, promising guaranteed freedoms and an economic recovery, while softening his Islamist rhetoric in a bid to reassure liberals, minority Christians and women.

The balloting, which continues Sunday, will produce Egypt's first president since the ouster of Mubarak, who is now serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled his regime. The winner will be only the fifth president since the monarchy was overthrown nearly 60 years ago.

The election is supposed to be the last stop in a turbulent transition overseen by the military generals. But even if they nominally hand over some powers to the winner, they will still hold the upper hand over the next president. The generals are likely to issue an interim constitutional declaration defining the president's powers. They will hold legislative powers, and they will likely appoint an assembly to write the permanent constitution, preserving a political role in the future.

Days before the vote, the military-appointed government also gave military police and intelligence agents the right to arrest civilians for a host of suspected crimes, which many saw as a de facto declaration of martial law. Already, the generals have been blamed for mismanaging the transition and they stand accused of killing protesters, torturing detainees and hauling at least 12,000 civilians before military courts since January 2011.

Using diplomatic language to convey Washington's concern about the latest development in longtime ally Egypt, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta emphasized to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler, "the need to ensure a full and peaceful transition to democracy."

In their phone call Friday, Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years, confirmed the military's intention to transfer power to a democratically elected government by July 1, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

Unlike in earlier post-Mubarak votes when Egyptians were confident the balloting would be free of interference, many this time said they expected tampering.

"I don't think Shafiq 'could' win, I think he 'will' win," said Nagwan Gamal, a 26-year-old engineering lecturer at Cairo University who voted for Morsi. "I think there will be corruption to ensure that he wins, though I think a lot of people will vote for him."

There were no immediate reports of significant violations at the polls. But several voters became alarmed by a rumor that they were being given pens with disappearing ink so that their ballots wouldn't count.

Gamal and others underscored a widespread belief that the ruling military wants to ensure a win by the president of its choosing. The military has said it does not back either candidate. There were scuffles and even a shootout between supporters of the two candidates in several places around the country.

For many, there was a sense of voting fatigue. Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"My name is Saber, which means 'patient', but my patience is gone," said Karim Saber, a 30-year-old driver who said he was saving to get married.

"The man before (Mubarak) did not do anything and whoever is succeeding him won't do anything," he said at a coffee house in the Basateen suburb south of Cairo. "I don't know what the solution is. I feel suffocated."

Outside a polling center at the Cairo suburb of Shubra el-Kheima, Sameh Mohammed declared: "I am not voting for either. They are all thieves and liars and cooperating with the military."

Mohammed, who now washes cars after his factory closed following the revolution, lashed out at the military, but said he doesn't trust the Brotherhood either. He had voted for Morsi the first round.

"They are all gambling with our lives," he said.

School teacher Mohammed Mustafa said he was voting to try to stop the return of the old regime.

"We lost this country for 30 years, and we are not ready to lose it again," he said.
