Endangered Australian Cockatoo Loses One Third of Population in Just 1 Year

Carnaby's black cockatoo It?s been a rough year for Western Australia?s iconic but endangered Carnaby?s black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus latirostris), which are endemic to the state and live nowhere else in the world. Their population has dropped 37 percent in the past year, from 12,954 roosting birds in 2010 to just 8,365 in 2011, according to the third Great Cocky Count, organized by BirdLife Australia and the Western Australia Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), which mobilized more than 260 volunteers to survey 185 sites to help map the birds? habitats and monitor their population trends.

Although the birds have been protected for more than a decade under Australia?s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 1999, their numbers have declined because of habitat loss and competition from other species.

Carnaby?s cockatoos (also known as short-billed black cockatoos or large black cockatoos) nest in the hollows of large trees. Many of these trees, typically 100 years old or more according to Australia?s DEC, have been lost to logging or development, or to people trying to neaten up their properties. Meanwhile, loss of wild habitat means that other cockatoo species?galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla) and western long-billed corellas (Cacatua pastinator)?and feral European honey bees (Apis mellifera) are all crowded into the same region and are now competing with the endangered cockatoos for tree hollows. Meanwhile, loss of habitat?enhanced by drought and wildfires?have created what has been called a ?food crisis for cockatoos,? pushing starving birds into the suburbs around Perth in a quest for food. As if all of that weren?t bad enough, the birds are also prized in the pet trade and illegal poaching remains a threat despite their protected status.

?Carnaby?s cockatoo populations have halved in the past 45 years and?their range has retracted by about a third,? Birdlife Australia program manager Cheryl Gole told Australian Geographic.

While Gole called the recent loss a ?red flag,? she cautioned that it is too early to start considering this drop to be a trend. The Great Cocky Count has produced reliable numbers only for 2010 and 2011. The first count, in 2006, relied on a different statistical model and is not held up as a comparison with the newer counts.

Nevertheless, the results have some conservation groups up in arms. ?To lose more than a third of an endangered species in just one year is a devastating result and shows that current conservation measures are failing,? said John McCarten, spokesperson for the Conservation Council of Western Australia, in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, some people are angry that it took nearly a year for the government to release the 2011 count results and blame Western Australia Minister of the Environment Bill Marmion. ?This is not the Great Cocky Count, this is the Great Cocky cover-up that Bill Marmion?s been engaged in,? shadow environment minister Sally Talbot, representing the opposition party, told PerthNow. ?Eleven months after the 2011 Great Cocky Count he still didn?t have the numbers, and now we can see why the minister was so anxious to not make them public. This is such a dramatic decline in the species that the government must be absolutely ashamed of its inaction.?

For his part, Marmion told the media that ?more research needs to be done to verify species numbers,? and he defended the government?s handling of the birds? plight, noting that it has invested more than $9.7 million in conservation funding and habitat preservation since 2008 to protect the Carnaby?s cockatoo and two other threatened cockatoo species.

But the conservationists, it seems, have some reason to mistrust the government?s commitment. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, it recently approved construction of new housing for the University of Western Australia that would be built over existing Carnaby?s cockatoo habitat and is considering a highway expansion project that would further impact the cockatoo and more than 100 other bird species.

The DEC says people in Western Australia can help Carnaby?s cockatoos by planting food plants or future nesting trees or erecting artificial habitats on their properties.

The 2012 Great Cocky Count will be held on April 15. BirdLife Australia is currently signing up volunteers, who may contact them at greatcockycount@birdlife.org.au

Jay-Z Brings Swag To His First-Ever SXSW Solo Show

AUSTIN, Texas — If Jay-Z fans thought his appearance at last year's South by Southwest Music Festival was a big deal, his first-ever solo performance at Austin City Limits Moody Theater on Monday night (March 12) was the opener to end all opening events, and bodes well for the action-packed week of events to come.

Officially entitled the "Amex Sync Show Presenting Jay-Z," fans around the world were able to take part in the show via its livestream in conjunction with a new Twitter initiative for American Express cardholders. MTV News was lucky enough to score tickets to the highly anticipated event.

Jay took the stage shortly after 7:30 p.m. CT, dressed casually except for the gold bling around his neck and wrist, opening with "What More Can I Say?"

"SXSW, you're welcome!" he shouted to a very diverse and enthusiastic crowd of 2,800. This was followed by familiar favorite "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," which featured the first of countless crowd sing-alongs.

As his most dedicated fans have come to expect, the man showcased his serious lyrical skills with a perfect mix of hits new and old. From "99 Problems," to "Big Pimpin'," to "Excuse Me Miss" (at the start of which he asked us all to "two step") to the sweet and sentimental "Glory," Jay kept the crowd hanging on his every word, manipulating our energy masterfully with mostly up-tempo tracks that kept everyone on their feet.

Ever the perfectionist, if Jay stumbled on a word or two in a track or didn't feel like he was totally on point, he would stop mid-song and re-start, for which he had the crowd's undying support.

"I don't f--- around with the words to my songs, y'all. You came to see a live show right?"

In addition to totally rocking the house, Jay seemed to be genuinely having a great time onstage. There were several times during the nearly 90-minute set when we saw him break out into full-on grins.

"I'm having a good time tonight I must say," he told the crowd and then later showed his fans respect by acknowledging their energy. "Y'all going to make me crawl away from here tonight," he said just before busting into "Encore."

There were diamonds in the sky in Austin Monday night for sure.

Pakistan's top court targets army

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's powerful military establishment is under rare scrutiny from the country's top court, which after a gap of 16 years has opened an investigation into allegations the army funneled money to politicians to influence elections.

The case has showcased the emerging power of the Supreme Court, which is also hearing a contempt case against the prime minister that could see him imprisoned. The court's activism has led to some uncomfortable headlines for politicians and pierced the perception of the generals' invulnerability.

But it's unclear who, if anyone, will be held accountable.

Indeed, some critics say by moving against the generals now, the court is just seeking to deflect criticism that it focuses solely on the alleged misdeeds of the elected civilian government and wants to dislodge President Ali Zardari, with the supposed nod from the military itself.

The court is also demanding answers from the army and spy agencies over the fate of hundreds of "missing" Pakistanis: suspected militants or separatists picked up and held by military authorities for months and years in secret detentions.

Analysts say the developments are part of jostling between the army, the court and the government, with each wanting to stake a claim on its sphere of influence. There seems to be a balance among them so far, with no side willing or strong enough to strike a decisive blow against another. Speculation of a military coup or the imminent ousting of the government, frequently raised in the media just a few months ago, has receded.

The court is acting on a petition filed in 1996 by former Air Vice Marshal Asghar Khan, demanding it investigate what he claimed were payments to right-wing politicians made by the army-run Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency, known as the ISI. The money was to be used to ensure that the Pakistan People's Party ? currently in power ? would not win the 1990 general elections.

Without explaining why, the court began hearing the case last month. Testimony this week has shone a light on longtime allegations that the ISI has tried to influence elections.

On Thursday, Yunus Habib, a 90-year-old banker from the state-owned Mehran Bank, testified that he doled out the equivalent of $1.5 million in bank funds to politicians and ISI officers on the orders of then army chief Gen. Aslam Beg and President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who was considered close to the army.

Some of the politicians who allegedly took the funds remain powerful political players, including opposition leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He has denied taking any money.

On Friday, former ISI chief Lt. Gen. Asad Durrani testified that he was directed by Beg to distribute the money among politicians from the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad, a right-wing political alliance allegedly set up by the military establishment to counter the PPP. He said Beg told him the money had been collected from the business community in Karachi.

The alleged bribes didn't give the alliance victory, however. It won 53 seats in the National Assembly, 49 less than the PPP that went on to form the government.

What happens next is uncertain.

Khan's lawyer Salman Raja said he wanted criminal cases brought against all those who distributed and received the money. That would roil the political scene and likely be opposed by the army. Moreover, the nature of the evidence against them is unclear.

Retired justice Tariq Mahmood said the case was a "morale booster" for the current government, but that it was unlikely anyone would be put on trial. "The government now has a chance to bring the intelligence agencies ... under its control," he said.

Political analyst Moeed Pirzada said the case put both the military and Nawaz Sharif on the defensive, which benefits the current PPP government, but would likely remain inconclusive. He said the court saw the case as "an opportunity to assert itself" following criticism by some over its pursuit of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Supreme Court justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudry has been accused of pursuing a vendetta against Zardari's PPP government. Zardari opposed Chaudry's reinstatement to the job in March 2009. The court has ordered Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani to reopen a corruption probe against Zardari.

Gilani has refused, arguing that Zardari has immunity from prosecution so long as he remains president. If found guilty of contempt for ignoring the order, Gilani could be imprisoned for six months and lose his job.
