Gas condensing furnaces are considered the most efficient-between 90 and 96 percent efficient. The combustion gases in the furnace are cooled to the point where water vapor condenses, releasing additional heat into the house. The liquids that result are piped to a floor drain.
Because the temperature of the flue gas is low, plastic pipes are used to vent the furnace out the sidewall of the house rather than through a conventional chimney. These furnaces tend to be slightly more efficient when they are run for shorter periods.
The cost of a new furnace can run from $1,200 to $12,000, depending on the size of the house and the kind of heating system being installed. Your heating contractor should not install a furnace with a higher capacity than needed for your house. Furnace manufacturers do not recommend oversizing furnaces, because the heating units will rust out and break down more often and cause the occupants more discomfort.
Oversizing will shorten the life of the equipment by causing it to cycle on and off more frequently than a properly sized unit. An oversized furnace also will not run long enough and will have a long span between cycles-hence the ?isn?t it getting chilly in here at night? syndrome.
Oversized equipment can also cause excessive air noise. On the other hand, undersized equipment, with airflow that is too low, can reduce the efficiency of the air distribution and accelerate wear on system components, leading to earlier failure.
