0;" title="ridejoylogo" width="100" />Looking to take a trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles without putting a major dent in your wallet? Ridejoy, a YC-backed startup that's launching today, might have exactly what you're looking for. The service allows drivers who are already planning to take a roadtrip to 'sell' their extra seats to other users. The net result: drivers earn money on trips they were planning on taking anyway, and Ridejoy passengers get a door-to-door lift, in some cases for less than they'd pay for a bus ticket. You may have seen Ridejoy before, at least in an early form: it did a one-off trial for Burning Man this year with BurningManRides.com ??a site that helped people coordinate their trips out to the Nevada desert. 1600 people signed up, 1150 rides were posted, and 400 rides were completed over a three-week span. In a neat twist, five pilots offered rides-by-air, completing a total of ten plane trips.
Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/AoMSEq3a4Tk/

unthink julianne hough chris cook nest lindsay lohan williams syndrome grand theft auto 5

Posted by Bridie-Lee Marie at 9:32 PM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=2045032734592768428&postID=8469393989531888247&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Cherry Grove, W.Va., on the edge of the Monongahela National Forest, already got 4 inches of snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy snow was falling in western Maryland, and the Frostburg area could receive 8 or 9 inches. Along the Blue Ridge Mountains between Hagerstown and Frederick, significant snowfall was also expected.

Farther north in central Pennsylvania, a steady midday heavy snow pelted the field at Beaver Stadium in State College, where No. 21 Penn State was to host Illinois. The BSE Sensex logged its biggest weekly gain in nearly two months on Friday, bolstered by gains in financials as hopes of an end to the monetary policy tightening cycle in Asia's third-largest economy drew investors back into beaten down stocks.

The gains in the domestic market were also underpinned by a rally in global stocks, which headed for their best week in over two years following EU leaders' efforts to contain the euro zone debt crisis.

Shares in ICICI Bank, the country's No. 2 lender, led the gains, rising 7.1 percent to 933.35 rupees ($18.85), as hopes of a pause in interest rate hikes boosted credit growth outlook. Still, the stock is down 18.5 percent so far this year.

The bank is also expected to report nearly 16 percent rise in its fiscal second-quarter profit on Monday.

The main 30-share BSE index ended up 2.98 percent at 17,804.80 points, after having risen as much as 3.6 percent in early deals to its highest level since Aug. 4, with all but three of the index components closing in the positive territory.

The benchmark, which is down 13.2 percent in 2011, surged 6.1 percent in this holiday truncated week -- its best weekly percentage gain since the week ended Sept. 2. The market was closed on Thursday after a brief special session on Wednesday.

"Interest rate hikes were a big overhang on the market and the investors were concerned about its impact on the corporate profitability," said Dipen Shah, head of research for private client group at Kotak Securities.

"The fact that the RBI has said there could be a pause now has come as a big relief to the market," he said.

The RBI raised interest rates on Tuesday for the 13th and possibly final time in a tightening cycle that began in early 2010, on expectations that persistently high inflation will finally begin to ease starting in December.

However, its governor said on Wednesday that the Reserve Bank of India will only consider easing monetary policy if inflation falls below 7 percent.

Indian shares have been battered this year as surging inflation and interest rates dimmed the growth outlook for the economy and corporate earnings. The global economic uncertainty has also pushed investors away from risky assets.

Shares in other financials such as top lender State Bank of India rose 2.3 percent to 1,909.80 rupees, No. 3 lender HDFC Bank gained 2.3 percent and top mortgage lender HDFC surged 3.2 percent.

Citigroup said on Tuesday it did not expect retail deposit rates or lending rates to be increased in the near term and that Indian banks would likely absorb the impact of the latest interest rate increase on their net interest margins.

Some analysts sounded caution on the sustainability of the stock market rally, citing lingering worries about the health of the global as well as the domestic economy.

"It's too early to say whether things will be all rosy from now on as there are still some concerns on the global macro as well as domestic fronts," said Kaushik Dani, a fund manager with Peerless Mutual Fund.

Morgan Stanley said in a report earlier this week domestic demand drivers such as private consumption, government spending and investment were all moderating, and export growth will also decelerate significantly as developed world growth weakens.

"We are thus increasingly concerned about the potential duration of the growth slowdown cycle," it said.

Infosys ended up 1 percent at 2,858.65 rupees, after rising 4.7 percent during trade to its highest level in more than three months, after the plan to resolve the European debt crisis boosted the business outlook in its No. 2 market.

Also, Infosys co-chairman said in Shanghai the country's No. 2 software services exporter was looking for acquisitions worth up to $700 million.

Infosys' bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services gained 2.3 percent to 1,121.50 rupees and No. 3 Wipro closed 5.4 percent higher at 374.05 rupees. Both the firms also count Europe as their second biggest export market.

Energy major Reliance Industries, which has the heaviest weightage in the BSE index, rose 3.0 percent to 900.00 rupees on institutional buying, dealers said. The stock is down just under 15 percent this year.

Drugmaker Dr Reddy's Labs rose 4.9 percent to 1,671.20 rupees after it posted a forecast-beating quarterly profit as robust sales growth in the U.S. offset a sluggish domestic business and higher operational costs.

The 50-share NSE index ended 3.1 percent higher at 5,360.70 points. In the broader market, around twice as many stocks gained as lost value on total volume of more than 728 million shares.

STOCKS THAT MOVED

* Top carmaker Maruti Suzuki fell 2.0 percent to 1,126 rupees after dropping as much as 3.3 percent. The reason for this temporary silence is pretty simple; I was on holidays. I had the unique misfortune of planning and booking a holiday smack bang on top of 2 of the biggest news weeks in mobile news history several months in advance. An unfortunate coincidence for which you all have my apologies.

So instead of playing a desperate game of catch-up and writing a bunch of out-dated articles about stuff you probably already know, we?re just going to acknowledge a few of the biggest things to happen during my absence, give you a little summary in case you?re unaware of it and then continue business as usual.

The iPhone 4S Release

We?ve been waiting and waiting? and waiting for a new iPhone and now one is finally here. The iPhone 4S managed to both excite and disappoint expectant fans and as such some tech gurus have been questioning its projected popularity.

We don?t really think Apple has anything to fear. Although it?s not quite all most had hoped for, the iPhone 4S is still a solid upgrade from the iPhone 4, in all reports. It sports a dual-core A5 processor running at 800MHz and a fantastic 8MP camera with a reduced lag time in between shots, not to mention some great software upgrades to help those of us with unstable hands decrease the level of blur in our pictures.

The third most notable addition is that of Siri, a voice activated native-speech tool that allows users to do anything from make an appointment to answer a question to send an email simply by speaking to their phone. We?re still yet to get our hands on a 4S, so we can?t say for sure just how viable Siri is, but from every 3rd party iPhone 4S review we?ve seen so far it actually seems to work, which is surprising to say the least. There are, of course, other new and nifty things but ultimately these are the 3 biggest reasons we can see anybody going for the iPhone 4S, rather than the iPhone 4.

General impressions of the 4S seem to match that of the iPhone 3GS back when it was released. That is to say, it?s a fantastic upgrade if you?re coming to the end of a 2 year plan. But whether or not you feel it?s worth it to upgrade from and iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S is going to be entirely up to you.

iOS 5

iOS 5 is starting to roll out across Apple devices. We?ve already gone in to the iOS 5 changes in our iOS 5 Update post a few months back, so if you?re interested in the specifics we suggest you check it out.

The Passing of Steve Jobs

We were greatly saddened to hear about the passing of Steve Jobs so shortly after his retirement. A few weeks ago we did a piece on his resignation and all he had done for the tech industry, and again in our post about the mobile world after 2011. However, we were completely unprepared for his passing so soon.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung and Google finally announced their latest joint project; the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which is set to become the next Google flagship phone as well as the first phone to come running Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Galaxy Nexus appears very much how one might expect it to look. That is, somewhere between a Galaxy S II and a Google Nexus S, with a few flourishes thrown in. The countoured screen is back, a feature that we definitely enjoyed on the Nexus S as it made the phone noticeably more comfortable when held against the face or kept in the pocket.

The rear plate is reminiscent of the Galaxy S II, which is a bit of a shame actually. In our Samsung Galaxy S II review we actually mentioned that the plastic back case of the GS2 was one of its less classy features. However, the Galaxy Nexus apparently comes with something Samsung is calling Hyperskin, that apparently increases slip resistance.

Hardware-wise the Galaxy Nexus is impressive. A dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM puts it in line with the GS2. The 5MP camera is a bit surprising, as we were expecting 8MP. Demonstrations of the camera itself do seem to be rather impressive though, despite its low MP count. An interesting feature of the camera on the Galaxy Nexus is that it has an almost instant response when clicking the shutter button. Photos can be taken with alarming speed and in rapid succession.

As usual with Samsung, the main drawing power of the Galaxy Nexus will probably prove to be its display. Boasting an amazing 4.65 inch, 1280 x 720 screen the Galaxy Nexus has the best resolution of any phone with a display over 3.5 inches. In case you missed it 1280 x 720 means 720p. So if you have a Plasma TV older than 3 or 4 years there?s a decent chance that this phone sports the same resolution as your Television. The Super AMOLED display?s odd sounding 4.65 inch size was employed to accommodate a 16:9 aspect ratio, also most likely the ratio of your TV. This means that when watching movies you won?t have any annoying black bars at the top or bottom of the handset.

Another great bit of info is that the Galaxy Nexus will be available in both HSPA+ and LTE models, depending on in which region you live. So there?s enough love for everyone to enjoy the maximum speed out of their local wireless networks.

A couple of other quick features are a mere 4.29mm bezel, which means the increase in screen size affects the overall dimensions of the device far less than it otherwise would. A profile of just 8.94 mm is definitely impressive considering the hardware of the Galaxy Nexus and Samsung have even apparently thrown a barometer in for good measure.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was finally announced in detail alongside the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The changes are overall relatively minor, which was to be expected as the purpose of Ice Cream Sandwich is to work towards the unification of Android devices, rather than add too much new functionality. However, being that this is a new Android update we found it pretty hard to gloss over the finer points, so this section will definitely go in to a bit more detail than the previous few.

Appearance-wise Android 4.0 looks like the love-child of Android Honeycomb and Android Gingerbread, but more attractive than either of its now aging parents. Google said in the keynote that the aim was to steer away from more traditional lists of information and instead aim for a more magazine-esque layout for menus and homescreens. Ultimately everything did look much nicer, with visuals and pictures where there never had been any before. The new Android font, Roboto, also seemed to add a new element of style that Android had been, until now, definitely lacking.

There?s been a new approach taken towards the classic button implementation of Android. Instead of there being 3 or 4 keys at the bottom of the display (usually capacitive), Google has implemented what its calling Virtual Buttons. Virtual Buttons act in much the same way as the old capacitive ones did, but they?re actually part of the display itself. This allows the display to become larger when watching movies, as the buttons can be hidden. It also offers the opportunity to do cute little things like mini animations when a button is pressed, or rotating the symbols on the keys when the phone is held in landscape mode. We think this is a pretty cool addition and are definitely intrigued to see it in action.

Gesture control has been unified across all of Android. That means that no matter what UI you have, if you?re making an Android 4.0 device from now on then the menu systems will have the same basic format and gestures will accomplish the same response.

Notifications can now be accessed even from the lock screen, cutting down on the time it takes to get in to your phone and check what?s been happening. There will also be the option to access the camera straight on the lock screen in order to help users catch those spur of the moment photo ops.

A few other handy additions are:

Folders can be made by just picking up one app and dropping it on top of another

Folders can be added to the favorites bar at the bottom of the homescreen

Gmail has received some useful UI upgrades

Screenshots can be taken by holding the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously

Browser updates to assist with jumping between tabs, saving pages so you can read them offline, or viewing pages in their native desktop format rather than a mobile format if you wish

All 4.0 devices will have music control from within the notifications bar (previously this function was added by manufacturers)

A Calendar update which looks intuitive and stylish

A Data Usage app that records your data usage and can alert the user or even shut off data usage once a manually entered threshold is passed

Improved photo editing services

Panoramic photos

Improved video recording software

That?s Just About It

That?s it for the biggest things that happened while we were silent. Of course there were a few other announcements but we think it best to focus on the juicy new stuff happening, rather than catching up on what?s passed. We apologize again for our temporary leave of absence and we?ll be back online from now on.

Source: http://www.whistleout.com/blog/temporary-break-in-communications

miami dolphins chicago bears charlie and the chocolate factory ou football ryan torain ryan torain texas rangers

Posted by Bridie-Lee Marie at 6:28 PM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=2045032734592768428&postID=2061719946996228883&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Initially open to her suggestions, Lee said Jackson became "upset" as time went on and repeatedly asked for her to give him propofol. Her testimony came a day after Jackson's longtime internist, Allan Metzger, testified that during the same period just before his death, Jackson had also asked him for intravenous anesthetic to help his insomnia. Lee had never heard of propofol, but after looking it up, she said she warned Jackson not to use it.

» Lee's testimony was briefly halted after she complained of feeling dizzy and burst into tears in the courtroom hallway; she returned to the stand a short time later. Reading from Lee's record, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren asked if she recalled telling Jackson, "Nobody who cared or had your best interest at heart is going to give you this." She said she did.

» Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor dealt a blow to the defense when he barred testimony about Jackson's contractual obligations to This Is It concert promoter AEG Live. Pastor said the details could potentially distract the jurors, despite arguments from Murray's defense team that the 42-page document would show that the singer was under tremendous financial pressure to pull off the 50-concert comeback series in London. Defense attorney Ed Chernoff said in court that if Jackson had been unable to perform, he would have to repay more than $30 million at a time when he was $400 million in debt.

» Phillips' testimony centered on his experience with Jackson during the meetings and rehearsals for the This Is It series of concerts, at which Jackson insisted he be allowed to bring Murray to care for him personally.

» Phillips recalled Jackson being disconnected and distracted and that the show's choreographer, Kenny Ortega, suggested to him in an email that he consider canceling the shows due to Jackson's seemingly questionable health. Phillips said Jackson addressed those concerns during a meeting between himself, Ortega, Jackson and manager Frank DiLeo, during which Jackson told Ortega the show must go on. "You build the house and I'll put on the door and paint it," Phillips recalled Jackson saying to Ortega.

» Henson took the stand briefly to describe his background in toxicology and his area of expertise in the area of drug testing and providing information to various defense attorneys before the judge called for the day's adjournment. Testimony will resume at 9 a.m. PT on Wednesday.

Murray, who was being paid $150,000 a month to care for Jackson, had pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and is now facing four years in prison. But new sentencing laws in California aimed at mandatorily reducing state prison overcrowding mean that, as a nonviolent offender with no prior record, he could be sentenced to county jail instead. If that is the case, his sentence could be reduced to two years and, because of overcrowding in the Los Angeles County jail, he may be allowed to serve the majority of his time under supervised house arrest.

Related Artists

Michael Jackson

Source: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1673178/michael-jackson-trial-nurse.jhtml

white house peyton manning gia fashion night out outlook the young and the restless the young and the restless

Posted by Bridie-Lee Marie at 3:16 AM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=2045032734592768428&postID=6075904840895838497&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); As many as 1,000 people were feared killed on Sunday when a powerful earthquake hit southeast Turkey, destroying dozens of buildings and trapping some victims alive under rubble.

As night fell, survivors and emergency workers battled to pull people out of the debris in the city of Van and town of Ercis, where a student dormitory collapsed.

Residents in Van joined in a frantic search, using hands and shovels and working under floodlights and flashlights, hearing voices of survivors crying for help under mounds of shattered concrete in pitch darkness and bitter cold.

"We heard cries and groaning from underneath the debris, we are waiting for the rescue teams to arrive," Halil Celik told Reuters as he stood beside the ruins of building that had collapsed before his eyes.

"All of a sudden, a quake tore down the building in front of me. All the bystanders, we all ran to the building and rescued two injured people from the ruins."

At another site, three teenagers were believed trapped under a collapsed building. People clambered over the masonry, shouting: "Is there anyone there?"

An elderly rescue worker sat sobbing, his exhausted face covered in dust. Police tried to keep onlookers back. Ambulance crews sat waiting to help anyone dragged out of the debris.

Turkey's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute said the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck at 1041 GMT and was five km (three miles) deep. It was among the strongest in Turkish history, and the worst since 1999.

Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said a dozen buildings collapsed in Van, an ancient city with a population of 1 million. Turkish media said 80 buildings, including a student dormitory, came down in Ercis, a city of 100,000 people near the Iranian border.

"Ambulances, soldiers, emergency teams are everywhere now, working on getting people out of collapsed buildings. I have seen many dead bodies being taken out, the teams are trying to find people alive," said a Reuters photographer in Ercis, some 100 km (60 miles) north of Van.

Kandilli Observatory general manager Mustafa Erdik told a news conference he estimated hundreds of lives had been lost. "It could be 500 or 1,000," he added. He said he based his estimate on the magnitude of the earthquake and quality of construction.

A nurse at a public hospital in Ercis said hospital workers were attending the wounded in the hospital garden because the building was badly damaged.

"We can't count dead or injured because we're not inside the hospital. There should be more than 100 dead bodies left next to the hospital. We left them there because it's dark and we didnt want to step on bodies," Eda Ekizoglu told CNN Turk television.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was traveling to Van and the cabinet was expected to discuss the quake on Monday morning.

"A lot of buildings collapsed, many people were killed, but we don't know the number. We are waiting for emergency help, it's very urgent," Zulfukar Arapoglu, the mayor of Ercis, told news broadcaster NTV.

"We need tents urgently and rescue teams. We don't have any ambulances, and we only have one hospital. We have many killed and injured," Arapoglu said.

Turkey's Red Crescent said one of its local teams was helping to rescue people from a student residence in Ercis. It sent had sent 1,200 tents, more than 4,000 blankets, stoves and food supplies, along with two mobile bakeries.

More than 70 aftershocks shook the area, further unsettling residents who ran into the streets when the initial quake struck. Television pictures showed rooms shaking and furniture toppling as people ran from one building.

DAZED

Dozens of emergency workers and residents scrambled over a multi-storey building in Van as they searched for anyone trapped inside.

Elsewhere, dazed survivors wandered past vehicles crushed by falling masonry.

Some 50 injured people were taken to hospital in Van, state-run Anatolian news agency reported.

Turkish media said phone lines and electricity had been cut off. The quake's epicentre was at the village of Tabanli, 20 km north of Van city, Kandilli said.

International offers of aid poured in from NATO, China, Japan, the United States, Azerbaijan, European countries and Israel, whose ties with Ankara have soured since Israeli commandoes killed nine Turks during a raid on an aid flotilla bound for the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip in 2010.

Serzh Sarksyan, the president of Turkey's longtime regional rival Armenia, phoned Turkey's President Abdullah Gul to offer his condolences.

Major geological fault lines cross Turkey and there are small earthquakes almost daily. Two large quakes in 1999 killed more than 20,000 people in northwest Turkey.

An earthquake struck Van province in November 1976, with 5,291 confirmed dead. Two people were killed and 79 injured in May when an earthquake shook Simav in northwest Turkey.

(Additional reporting by Seda Sezer, Ece Toksabay and Seyhmus Cakan, writing by Ibon Villelabeitia and Daren Butler; Albert Pujols simply let his bat make all the noise. And boy, it was pretty loud.

Pujols hit three impressive home runs to tie the World Series record, amassing five hits and six RBIs Saturday night as the St. Louis Cardinals romped past the Texas Rangers 16-7 for a 2-1 edge.

The outburst by the three-time NL MVP came a day after he was barbed by the media for not sticking around to talk about a Game 2 error and loss. This time, everyone was talking about him.

Pujols, who was 0 for 6 in the first two games, became the third player to hit three homers in a Series game. He joined Babe Ruth, who did it in 1926 and again in 1928, and Reggie Jackson's performance in 1977.

His six RBIs tied the record in a game, matching Bobby Richardson in 1960 and Hideki Matsui in 2009.

Oh, Pujols also matched the Series mark for hits in a game set by Paul Molitor in 1982. Just think, too ? Pujols' monster night came after he grounded out in the first inning.

"It's an honor to be named in the same category as those guys," Pujols said.

The Cardinals mashed their way to the highest-scoring game in their storied postseason history.

After two taut games in St. Louis, this suddenly turned into a messy slugfest. Pujols, the most feared slugger in the majors, was right in the middle ? he became the first player in Series history to get hits in four straight innings.

Texan fans booed after first base umpire Ron Kulpa's blown call helped the Cardinals score four times in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. The crowd at Rangers Ballpark went silent when Pujols started swinging for the fences, and beyond. His three-run shot in the sixth rattled the windows of the club level in left field.

Game 4 is Sunday night, with Derek Holland starting for the Rangers against Edwin Jackson. It will be the back half of a St. Louis-Texas style doubleheader ? earlier in the day, the Rams play the Dallas Cowboys right across the parking lot.

This game had an NFL score, too, for much of the evening. The teams combined for 23 runs and 28 hits ? at Busch Stadium, they teamed for eight runs and 23 hits in two games.

"You leave a ball up in this park it's going to carry a little more than it does in St. Louis," Pujols said.

Good-luck charm Allen Craig homered for St. Louis and Yadier Molina drove in four runs. The Cardinals broke it open by scoring four times in the fourth, three more in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Adrian Beltre kept mashing for the Texas, getting four hits and driving in four runs.

Pujols, however, had the defining game of his career. Good timing, too, as he heads into free agency.

The big slugger connected off Alexi Ogando in the sixth, hit a two-run drive off Michael Gonzalez in the seventh and tagged Darren Oliver for a solo shot with two outs in the ninth.

By the end, it was hard to keep track of all the hits. Balls were rolling into the corners, sailing over the fence and going most everywhere.

In the seventh, a fan wearing a Rangers shirt threw a ball toward St. Louis left fielder Matt Holliday as he was preparing to catch a fly ball. The fan was led away by security.

Early in the game, it appeared Kulpa's call would be the focal point.

The Cardinals led 1-0 when Pujols led off the fourth with a single. Holliday followed with a perfect double-play ball, but was ruled safe by Kulpa at first. Replays clearly show part-time first baseman Mike Napoli caught second baseman Ian Kinsler's high toss and slapped a tag on Holliday before he reached the bag.

The Rangers argued, to no avail. The Cardinals quickly scored four times, helped when Napoli threw wide to the plate for an error that let two runs cross. Texas fans booed as replays of the bad call circulated ? they won't be happy to learn, either, that Kulpa was born, raised and lives in the St. Louis area.

For the Cardinals, perhaps it was a little evening up, albeit many years later. The call came four days before the anniversary of umpire Don Denkinger's missed call at first base in the 1985 World Series that severely cost St. Louis.

Starters Kyle Lohse of St. Louis and Matt Harrison were both pulled in the fourth inning. Soon after, it was clear that no pitchers were going to be too effective.

Lance Lynn earned the win with three innings of relief and Harrison took the loss.

NOTES: Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earned his 68th postseason victory. He moved ahead of Bobby Cox into second place. Joe Torre leads with 84. ... Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki threw out the first ball. The 7-foot Nowitzki fired a fastball from the mound that Young scooped. There has never been a 7-foot major leaguer, though 7-1 pitcher Loek Van Mil is in the Angels' system.

Source: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/topstories/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111023/ap_on_sp_ba_ga_su/bbo_world_series

war of 1812 jeffrey eugenides jeffrey eugenides volcker rule matthew stafford rosie o donnell terrell owens

Posted by Bridie-Lee Marie at 11:26 PM No comments:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to XShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest

Rachel Fine: I Now Pronounce You... Wake up refreshed with a brain-monitoring alarm clock

We all know the feeling, the short, sharp shock of waking to the sound of an alarm clock. Whether the traditional clattering metal bells, the incessant beeping of digital or the dulcet tones of today's radio news reader. Even the chance to slap the snooze button to grab a few extra moments between the sheets does not leave everyone feeling refreshed when they finally crawl out of bed. Now, researchers in India think they have the answer.

Writing in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, the researchers describe an alarm clock that monitors your brain activity and triggers its alarm within a time window you set in advance but only when your brain is in a more easily roused state rather than deep sleep. "By using such an alarm clock, the user will wake feeling much more refreshed than if they were awakened by a conventional alarm clock that rings at a set time," explains Jemina Asnoth Sylvia of Jerusalem College of Engineering in Tamil Nadu.

Sleep is a behavioral state that is a natural part of every individual's life. We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. Although the precise functions of sleep remain a mystery, sleep is important for normal motor and cognitive functions as well as growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems. After waking naturally, we recognize changes that have occurred, as we feel rested and more alert. However, many people use an alarm clock to wake them at a set time, which is when problems occur for some of us.

The researchers point out that sleep usually involves 90-minute cycles of brain activity during which there are periods when the brain is most arousable. If a person is woken, from a night's sleep, during such an arousable period in the cycle, they will feel more refreshed than if they are woken during a deeper part of the sleep cycle. To take advantage of this requires putting EEG scalp electrodes on the head to monitor brain activity and to hook the output to a modified alarm clock. Once out of the experimental stage, the team envisages a head-band worn while sleeping that uses wireless electrodes.

In tests, the alarm time is set and the monitoring process is set to begin 90 seconds before the alarm time. An onboard computer determines what stage of their brain activity cycle the sleeper is in during the 90-second monitoring time. If they are in the 3rd or 4th stage of sleep, the alarm is "snoozed" automatically. However, if they are in stage 1 or 2 of sleep, the more arousable stages, the alarm is sounded to wake the sleeper.

The team adds that it is feasible to record brain activity during the night to obtain a so-called "hypnogram" to determine how well you are sleeping overall. This would allow you to adjust your alarm time so that the monitoring window coincided more often with stage 1 or 2. That might mean an earlier alarm call, up to 45 minutes earlier, but it would be a gentler more refreshed awakening. Of course, the converse would also be possible - a "snooze" or 45 minutes and an even more rested and refreshed awakening. Just don't blame the researchers if you are late for work!

NASA Sets Guidelines to Preserve Apollo Moon Landing Sites (SPACE.com)

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico ? NASA has begun drafting guidelines to protect the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 landing sites, listing them as off-limits, and including ground-travel buffers and no-fly zones to avoid spraying rocket exhaust or dust onto aging, but historic, equipment.

Robert Kelso, NASA?s director of lunar commercial services at Johnson Space Center in Houston, has taken a hard look at future revisits to the Apollo sites and how to protect U.S. government artifacts on the moon.

Kelso has carved out a set of guidelines intended to safeguard the historic and scientific value of more than three dozen "heritage sites" on the lunar surface.?

The report, which was released on July 20, is titled "NASA?s Recommendations to Space-Faring Entities: How to Protect and Preserve the Historic and Scientific Value of U.S. Government Lunar Artifacts."?[Photos: NASA's Apollo Moon Missions]

A greater urgency for guidelines has been sparked by the Google Lunar X Prize?s offer of $20 million to any private team that lands a robotic rover on the moon?s surface. An additional $4 million has been offered for any team that snaps pictures of artifacts near or at the Apollo landing sites.

Key question

For Kelso, a key question is: "As the small commercial landers make preparations for possible visits to these historic sites, how do we protect these culturally significant sites from damage so that we can inspect them historically and scientifically?"

The recommendations listed by NASA are intended to apply to U.S. government artifacts on the lunar surface, such as:

  • Apollo lunar surface landing and roving hardware;
  • Unmanned lunar surface landing sites (e.g., Surveyor robotic landing sites) and impact sites, such as those of NASA's Ranger spacecraft, as well as the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) that slammed into the moon in October 2009;
  • U.S. government experiments left on the lunar surface, tools, equipment, miscellaneous moonwalking gear; and
  • Specific indicators of U.S. human, human-robotic lunar presence, including footprints and rover tracks.

Archaeological input

A recognized leader in the emerging field of space heritage and archaeology is Beth O?Leary, an anthropology professor here at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

O?Leary has spent more than a decade working with historians and archaeologists researching how to study and curate human artifacts on the moon. [Photos: Our Changing Moon]

Given a small grant from NASA and the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium, O?Leary spearheaded work through a Lunar Legacy Project that investigated protection of the Apollo 11 landing site.

?There is a need for more archaeological input into the process of protecting what is certainly humanity?s most extraordinary series of events that led us off the Earth and onto the Moon,? O?Leary told SPACE.com.

The recent capacities of NASA?s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) ? now circling the moon ? has? demonstrated that the probe could be used by archaeologists as an important remote sensing tool for identifying and mapping historic lunar sites.?

Keep-out zones

O?Leary said that the NASA guidelines create a series of keep-out zones and boundaries around the historic artifacts and features at all Apollo sites. Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 are acknowledged as having special historical and cultural significance, she said.

Those two locales are treated as unique by prohibiting visits to any part of these sites, and all future visiting vehicles would remain beyond the "artifact boundaries" of each entire site.

"This provides a robust zone of protection around these two sites," O?Leary said.

In the NASA study ? for hopper configuration landers that are able to perform "low-altitude"/tangential fly-bys of identified sites ? special guidelines have been written to ensure negligible plume interactions at the surface.

High heritage value

"For me, the NASA document represents a giant leap for lunar historic preservation," O?Leary explained. "NASA references its ownership of its lunar hardware and the need for protecting what it calls 'witness plates' or 'lunar assets' ? those significant artifacts it created in the past that are now on the moon. This is a critical first step and many more have to follow, but for the first time NASA formally recognizes the heritage value of Apollo 11 and other extraordinary lunar sites."

The NASA report also recognizes there have been no human impacts to the sites, which are in pristine, undisturbed condition except for the effects of the space environment.??

"Importantly, it recognizes that future missions can disturb or change the earlier lunar sites in ways that scientific and historic information can be lost," O?Leary said. Also, some of the sites are still active and continue to provide data ? such as Apollo retro-reflectors used to measure the distance between the Earth and moon via laser ranging.

"It was time for a preservation strategy," O?Leary said.

Is Mexico's economy really driving down illegal immigration to the US?

A big drop in illegal immigration seems to be taking place along the US-Mexico border. Some attribute this to rising prosperity in Mexico, but other more influential factors are in play.

According to a 2010 Department of Homeland Security report, the number of undocumented immigrants living in the US declined from 11.6 million in 2008 to 10.6 million in 2009, the largest decrease in 30 years. One of the most common explanations for this phenomenon is that Mexico has witnessed the emergence of a middle class, lessening the economic incentive to cross the border. While it is true that a segment of the population has seen a growth in disposable income over the past five years, a July study by consulting firm De la Riva Group revealed that only 32 percent of the country is ?middle class,? defined as making the equivalent of between 13,500 pesos ($1,000) and 98,499 pesos ($7,360) per month.

In contrast, the latest poverty statistics from Mexico?s government poverty monitor CONEVAL indicate that the number of people living below the poverty line in Mexico (2,114 pesos or $158 per month in urban areas, 1,329 pesos or $99 per month in the countryside) increased by 3.2 million between 2008 and 2010, and now stands at 52 million. This figure amounts to more than 46 percent of the country's 112 million inhabitants. This directly contradicts optimistic accounts in the US media which imply that increasing standards of living in Mexico are causing immigration to fall, such as recent articles in the Sacramento Bee and New York Times. While CONEVAL notes that some states (notably Puebla, Coahuila, and Morelos) have made inroads against poverty, it cannot by any means be said that Mexico is mostly middle class.

Another commonly cited explanation for the reduction in undocumented migration is the surge in deportations under the Obama administration, which presents a further deterrent to those thinking about crossing the border. According to figures recently released by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), a record 396,906 individuals were deported from October 2010 through September of this year. As a result of this trend, many individuals who continue to risk the perilous border crossing are seasoned experts who have crossed multiple times, often because they have families in the U.S. According to the New York Times, 56 percent of arrests at the Mexican border in 2010 involved people who had been caught previously, up from 44 percent in 2005.
