Brown pelicans dying from mystery puncture wounds (AP)

MORRO BAY, Calif. ? State Fish and Game wardens are trying to figure out why so many brown pelicans are showing up along California's Central Coast with huge puncture wounds in their chests.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune (http://bit.ly/nS5InW) reports that 15 birds have died in recent days from wounds that could have been caused by a knife or other sharp object.

Last Thursday three were brought into the Pacific Wildlife Care center in Morro Bay and two had to be euthanized because the injuries were so bad. The third is being treated.

The pelicans could be injuring themselves on rocks as they dive for baitfish in Port San Luis and Avila Beach, but officials say they can't rule out foul play. The wounds are more serious than typical injuries from fish hook and line entanglements, according to center director Jeanette Stone.

"These are wounds that are huge, gaping and ripped open at the chest," she said.

Pelicans, which are drawn to the area because of the profusion of baitfish, are frequently injured during the late summer months. Juvenile birds that aren't proficient foragers have been known to try to take fish at the end of a fishermen's line.

"They are pretty desperate animals right now," Stone said.

Obama's uncle charged with drunken driving

President Barack Obama's uncle was stopped on suspicion of drunken driving, told police he planned to arrange bail through the White House and was being held without bail on an immigration detainer, authorities said Monday.

Onyango Obama was arrested last week in Framingham, about 20 miles west of Boston, after police said he made a rolling stop through a stop sign and nearly caused a cruiser to strike his sport utility vehicle.

Police said that after being booked at the police station, Obama was asked whether he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail.

"I think I will call the White House," he stated, according to a police report filed in Framingham District Court.

Police said Obama, who's originally from Kenya and is the half-brother of the president's late father, pleaded not guilty Friday and was being held without bail on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a court document, ICE said he had an earlier deportation or removal order.

His immigration status couldn't immediately be confirmed, but such orders are generally reserved for people living in the country illegally.

An immigration detainer, used by ICE to identify people in jail or prison who could be deported, is a request to another law enforcement agency to notify ICE before releasing the person from custody so ICE can arrange to take over custody.

A spokesman for ICE declined to comment on Obama's immigration case, and the White House had no comment.

The president refers in his memoir "Dreams from My Father," about retracing his roots and his 1988 trip to Kenya, to an Uncle Omar, who matches Obama's background and has the same date of birth.

Obama, 67, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.

Michael Rogers, a spokesman for Cleveland immigration attorney Margaret Wong, said Wong will represent Obama. He confirmed that Obama is the half-brother of the president's father and the brother of another relative, the president's aunt Zeituni Onyango, of Boston.

Onyango made headlines last year when she won the right to stay in the United States after an earlier deportation order. She came to the U.S. from Kenya in 2000 and was denied asylum by an immigration judge in 2004.

She stayed in the country illegally and was granted asylum last year by a judge who found she could be a target in Kenya not only for those who oppose the U.S. and the president but also for members of the Kenyan government.

In "Dreams from My Father," the president mentions photographs of his Uncle Omar, "the uncle who had left for America twenty-five years ago and had never come back." He also discusses a Kenyan expression about getting lost, meaning to not see someone in a while or to move away and stop communicating with relatives ? "like our Uncle Omar, in Boston."

Framingham police said Obama was arrested Wednesday after he failed to stop completely at a stop sign and a police officer had to quickly apply his brakes to avoid hitting Obama's SUV.

Officer Val Krishtal said in a written report that Obama slurred his speech and became argumentative after he was told that he was being stopped because he had failed to fully stop and yield to traffic.

"I explained to him that I narrowly avoided striking his vehicle, and he told me that he did not hear my tires screeching so I was not being accurate," Krishtal said in the report.

Obama originally told Krishtal he had nothing to drink but later said he had had two beers, Krishtal wrote in the report.

Krishtal said Obama failed several sobriety tests and blew a reading of 0.14 percent on a blood-alcohol breath test, which is above the state's legal driving limit of 0.08 percent.

The president's administration announced this month that it would allow many illegal immigrants facing deportation the chance to stay in the U.S. and apply for work permits and would focus on removing convicted criminals and people who might be national security or public safety threats.

Oil below $86 as US refineries survive hurricane (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices rose to near $86 a barrel Monday in Asia after a hurricane left minimal damage among refineries along the U.S East Coast.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up 46 cents to $85.83 at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 7 cents to settle at $85.37 on Friday.

In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 23 cents at $111.13 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Tropical Storm Irene packed hurricane-force winds when it slammed into the East Coast near North Carolina this weekend and headed north into New York. The storm was blamed for at least 21 deaths, widespread severe flooding and more than 4 million homes and business losing power.

Oil refineries in the region have so far reported no major damage.

The National Hurricane Center said Monday that Irene was maintaining 50 mph (80 kph) maximum sustained winds as it neared the U.S.-Canada border.

"The greatest impact from the storm is likely to be the impact on regional economic activity caused by flooding and power outages," J.P. Morgan said in a report. "These could take some time to restore to normal, and is therefore likely to reduce petroleum demand in the interim."

After jumping from $84 in February to near $115 in May then sliding back down to $76 earlier this month, crude has traded close to $85 for the past week as traders look for evidence of the severity of the slowdown in economic growth in the U.S. and Europe.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke didn't propose any new steps to stimulate the economy during a speech in Wyoming on Friday.

In other Nymex trading for October contracts, heating oil fell 0.8 cent to $3.01 per gallon and gasoline futures dropped 0.3 cent to $2.76 per gallon. Natural gas for September delivery slid 2.1 cents to $3.91 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Motivation By Facing Facts

This article has been viewed 3 times.

?Things is either done, or they ain?t done.? Marlon Sanders

Some of the greatest truths are the most obvious. But they are also the most overlooked. Many of us need to take a look at the importance of facing the facts and accepting that more usually needs to be done to complete whatever we are doing.

It is very easy to kid ourselves that we have done something or finished something when we haven?t. We need to be motivated by taking a thorough look at whatever we are doing to check that it really is finished and finished well. If you are tired and think you have already done a good job it is tempting to stop work before the job is properly completed.

Whenever I mowed the lawn and considered it mown, I could guarantee that my mother would be able to point out long grass at the edges of the lawn that had not been properly mown.

She was right; the lawn had not been properly cut at the edges. The job was not done. No job can ever be completed perfectly but it should be completed well enough to pass some scrutiny.

Recently, a parcel sent to me at No 19 arrived at No 9. The postman had not bothered to read the number properly. The people at No 9 had to finish his job for him. He had not delivered the mail.

A few months ago, I came across a great account by Martin Avis of a talk given by Marlon Sanders, the great internet guru, in Birmingham, UK in January 2005. My thanks to Martin for giving me permission to copy his account of this talk.

I heard Marlon myself some years ago in London and he knows how to hold an audience. Before he even started his talk, he arranged to have the whole audience blowing bubbles. By the time he started speaking everyone was relaxed and ready to listen.

In Birmingham, Marlon told his listeners to remember:

?There?s only two things that matter:

?Things is either done, or they ain?t done.?

As Marlon spoke his voice became louder and louder:

?When sumthin?s done you gotta product, you gotta promotion, you got sumthin? that?s gonna make you money.

?When it ain?t done, it don?t matter if its half done or nearly done or gonna get done someday ? IT AIN?T DONE.?

The volume reached the point where people in the hotel next door started paying attention.

?And if it AIN?T DONE, it?s jack.

?DONE equals making money, sitting on the beach, taking long vacations and havin? fun. DONE equals a smiley face.

?AIN?T DONE equals nothin?. No product, no vacation, no beach, no money and no fun. AIN?T DONE equals a sad face.?

Marlon smiled and knew his point was made.

He said a whole lot more in four hours of sessions over that weekend, but from that day forward the 35 people there will always think in terms of DONE or AIN?T DONE. (Martin?s account ends here.)

Simple but powerful stuff. As usual Marlon goes right to the heart of success.

Success has been described as both doing what you plan to do and also not doing what you plan not to do. It could also be described as ?getting it done and not half done.?

Success and failure could be summed up in the immortal words ?DONE or AIN?T DONE.?

Money Matters ? Financial Fire Drill: More Insurance - CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) ? Your ability to earn an income is important for you and your dependents.

What you need is disability insurance if your ability to work is interrupted and you become disabled.

Disability insurance covers the loss of your income when you are out of work. Your employer may offer it as a paid benefit or offer it to you to purchase. Short term disability insurance can kick in within 30 days. Long term may take 90 days to kick in.

If you have a couple of months of living expenses set aside in an emergency fund a long term policy is all you need. The younger you are the more important disability insurance becomes. And if you are single you need to protect that income stream for yourself.

If you pay into Social Security you also have a disability policy there, but the requirements are very strict as to who receives disability benefits from Social Security.

Life insurance is used to cover the loss of your income for your dependents if you should die. A young couple with children needs lots of life insurance. You need to have enough insurance to provide a future income stream for your family and if you want to send the kids to college you?ll need college money and if you want the house paid off so your spouse and kids can stay there you?ll need mortgage money also.

Add that all up and you could be looking at a million dollar insurance policy. Stay at home moms and dads need life insurance also.

The cheapest way to go is to purchase term insurance. All you are buying here is life insurance. No fancy investments or savings plan, just insurance and for most individuals insurance is all you need.

Check out the Internet for some good deals and help with calculating just how much insurance is enough insurance. Quicken has teamed up with a website, InsWeb to help you find the best deals in life insurance. You can get help there for other types of insurance as well. Check out Microsoft?s website also.

On my website there is an insurance needs worksheet. You can easily print it out and work on it. But you will need a calculator for the addition and subtraction.

Be sure you keep your life insurance policies in an accessible file so they can be easily found. Don?t forget to put copies in your Disaster Bag.

San Francisco Offers $7000 Home Improvement Rebates | Tampa ...

san-francisco-remodeling

Think of saving up to $7,000. While coming away with a nice home renovation. Yes, the two ideas can coincide, thanks to a new incentive program available to residents of San Francisco, California.

Called the San Francisco Home Improvement and Performance, or SF HIP, the program is another sign that the home improvement market has shifted from new, over-sized homes to renovations that benefit the homeowner and the environment.

Get Up to $7,000 Back for Your Renovation

The project was officially introduced in April, initiated by both San Francisco mayoral candidate Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting and the city?s Department of the Environment. Ting told the Bay Area Reporter that the incentive program ?is particularly beneficial to those who own older homes, who have been living in them for 20 or 30 years, and may have a water heater that?s 50 years old.?

Fliers went out about the program to property owners this year, but many people still don?t know that money is available to them upon renovation.

To get pricing information about a project in your area, click here.

This program is meant to be an all-around win. Homeowners can save money on energy costs. Needed improvements are made with quality and attention. The value of a renovated property shoots up?a green home sells for around $20,000 more over a non-green one. Not to mention that green remodeling makes a home run more efficiently, reducing your energy bills immediately.

The rebate itself is instant. The amount returned is deducted upfront from the cost of improvements, rather than later on at tax time.

Who Qualifies for San Francisco Home Improvement Rebates?

san-francisco-remodelInterested homeowners can schedule an energy audit, which will include a home safety check. Those who qualify include only single-family homeowners who are PG&E customers. Homeowners must achieve at least 15% of the energy efficiency improvements revealed in the audit.? The maximum rebate amount is $7,000, which will drop by $1,000 after this coming August 31.

While you can go through this process on your own, it?s best to search for a contractor, preferably the pros who deal with home improvements and rebates all the time. The process will not only go smoother, but you?ll be sure that what you?re choosing and installing meets the qualifications.

The process of applying for funding, securing the remodeling rebates, and completing the home improvements correctly often turns a renovation from a hassle to a pleasant experience (resulting in a better home and an immediate financial return on your investment). More than that, the process often requires the help of a contractor.

You can get in touch with a contractor by clicking here.

Ex-policeman held in Russian reporter killing

Russian investigators on Tuesday arrested a retired police officer on suspicion of organizing the 2006 killing of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was gunned down in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building.

But this arrest, like the arrest of the suspected triggerman in May, still does not address the issue of who might have ordered the killing of Politkovskaya, a sharp critic of the Kremlin and its chosen strongman in Chechnya.

Tuesday's arrest of retired Lt. Col. Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov was first reported by editors at Politkovskaya's newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, and later confirmed by investigators.

Pavlyuchenkov was paid "by a person whose identity is still unknown" to organize the killing, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said in remarks carried by all three Russian news agencies.

The retired officer formed a group to carry out the crime and provided the murder weapon, Markin said.

The brutal attack drew worldwide attention to violence against journalists in Russia, rated one of the most dangerous countries in the world for reporters. Suspicions of government involvement in the killing have been widespread.

The suspected gunman, Rustam Makhmudov, was arrested in his native Chechnya in May. His two brothers were accused of playing minor roles in the killing, as lookout and getaway driver.

Another retired Moscow police officer, Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, was initially accused of supplying the murder weapon, but a court acquitted him and the two Makhmudov brothers in 2009. The Supreme Court overruled the acquittal and sent the case back to prosecutors.

Politkovskaya, who was 48 when she died, won international acclaim for her reports on violence, police oppression and corruption in Chechnya and other parts of the Russian Caucasus gripped by an Islamic insurgency.

Vladimir Putin, who was Russia's president at the time, remained silent for three days after Politkovskaya's killing and then said that her influence on Russian political life was "extremely insignificant."

The inconclusive investigation and the botched trial added to suspicions of government involvement in the killing.
